Do heat pumps work in Minnesota winters?

- Right-sized, not oversized. Sizing should come from a Manual J load calculation, not a rule of thumb, an oversized heat pump short-cycles and gives up the efficiency you paid for.
- A real backup-heat plan. Whether that’s dual-fuel with a gas furnace or electric backup, the changeover temperature should be set deliberately, not left on a default.
- Ductwork that can carry the airflow. Heat pumps deliver heat at a lower air temperature than a furnace, so leaky or undersized ducts show up fast. Sealing, and often a duct cleaning, is worth checking first.
