Gray Duct Learning Center

HVAC brands we install, and how to choose

Gray Duct installs Heil and Goodman for heating and cooling, and AprilAire for whole-home indoor air quality. Here's what each brand is genuinely known for, how the tiers and warranties really compare, and an honest take on which is right for your Twin Cities home.

Start here

The brand matters less than the install

Here's the honest answer most companies won't give you: a correctly sized system (a real Manual J load calculation) that's installed and sealed right will outperform a "better" brand that's oversized or poorly installed. Every major brand builds good equipment today. What separates a system that lasts 15+ years from one that struggles is sizing, airflow, duct sealing, and commissioning, the part you can't see on the spec sheet.

That's why we install a short list of brands we trust and stand behind, and why we won't upsell you a premium tier your home doesn't need.

What each brand is really known for

Heating · Cooling · Heat pumps

Heil

Known for
A full line of high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps built by International Comfort Products (part of the Carrier family), led by the premium Ion System of variable-speed, communicating equipment.
Lineup & tiers
Three tiers: Ion (premium, variable-speed, communicating controls, quietest and most efficient), Performance (mid, single- or two-stage), and Comfort (value/entry). High-efficiency gas furnaces reach into the high-90s % AFUE; Ion air conditioners climb into the high-teens SEER2.
Reliability & warranty
Most equipment carries a 10-year limited parts warranty when registered on time, and select premium furnaces add a limited lifetime heat-exchanger warranty. Heil shares core engineering with Carrier and Bryant.
Right for
Homeowners who want quiet, even, variable-speed comfort and strong efficiency, without paying for the top-name badge.
Our first-hand take
We install Heil when a customer wants communicating, variable-speed comfort that holds an even temperature room to room. Registering the warranty on time and keeping up annual maintenance is what actually protects that 10-year coverage.

Goodman

Known for
Straightforward value, American-built and Daikin-owned (assembled in Texas), with some of the strongest warranties in the category for the price.
Lineup & tiers
Gas furnaces from 80 % up to roughly 96–98 % AFUE, plus single- and two-stage air conditioners and heat pumps into the mid-to-high-teens SEER2. Mostly single/two-stage rather than fully modulating.
Reliability & warranty
Known for warranty value: many units carry a 10-year parts limited warranty, and select furnaces a limited lifetime heat-exchanger warranty (with registration). Backed by Daikin, the world's largest HVAC manufacturer.
Right for
Budget-conscious replacements, rental and investment properties, and homeowners who want dependable comfort at the best up-front price.
Our first-hand take
Goodman is the dependable workhorse we reach for when up-front cost matters most. You give up the fully modulating comfort of a premium tier, but you get proven parts and excellent warranty value.

Indoor air quality

AprilAire

Known for
Whole-home indoor air quality, the brand that essentially invented the whole-house humidifier. Made in Madison, Wisconsin.
Lineup & tiers
Whole-home humidifiers (bypass, fan-powered, and steam), high-efficiency whole-house media air cleaners (commonly MERV 11–16), whole-home dehumidifiers, fresh-air ventilation (ERV/HRV), and air-quality monitors and thermostats.
Reliability & warranty
Most AprilAire equipment carries a 5-year limited warranty and has been the built-in IAQ standard for decades.
Right for
Minnesota homes fighting bone-dry winter air (static shocks, cracked skin, gaps opening in wood floors and trim) and summer humidity, dust, and allergens, especially when paired with clean ductwork.
Our first-hand take
AprilAire is the indoor-air-quality layer that sits on top of either furnace brand. It pairs naturally with our NADCA-certified duct cleaning, clean ducts plus the right humidifier and media filter is what actually moves the needle on comfort and dust.

AprilAire isn't a furnace or AC brand, it's the indoor-air-quality layer (humidity, filtration, ventilation) that installs onto either system. Most homes get the biggest comfort jump from the right pairing, not the most expensive box.

Bottom line: whichever brand you choose, protect the investment, register the warranty, keep up annual maintenance (often required to keep coverage valid), and ask about financing before you decide. Not sure which fits? Get a free, no-pressure estimate.
