Window AC vs. mini-split vs. central air
The short answer
Choose a window AC to cool one room cheaply or temporarily. Choose a ductless mini-split for efficient, room-by-room comfort with no ductwork, ideal for additions, bonus rooms, and homes without ducts. Choose central air for even, quiet, whole-home cooling when you already have (or can add) ducts. Window costs the least up front, central serves the most square footage, and mini-splits are usually the most efficient.
Which one is right for you? The quick version
Start with three questions: How much space are you cooling, one room or the whole house? Do you have ductwork? And how permanent is the solution? Your answers point straight to one of the three.
- One room, cheap, temporary → a window AC.
- A room or few with no ducts, or you want room-by-room control → a ductless mini-split.
- The whole home, and you have or can add ducts → central air.

Window air conditioners: cheap, fast, and temporary
A window unit is the lowest-cost, fastest way to cool a single room. You buy it off the shelf, set it in the window, and plug it in, no installer, no ductwork. For a renter, a spare bedroom, or a stopgap before a bigger project, that's hard to beat.
The trade-offs are real, though:
- One room only. Window units can't cool a whole house, and running several is loud and inefficient.
- Noise. The compressor sits in the room with you, so it's the loudest of the three.
- Efficiency and sealing. The gaps around the unit leak air, and window ACs are the least efficient option.
- Minnesota winters. They have to come out (or be covered) each fall, or they leak cold air and waste heat all winter.
Ductless mini-splits: efficient, zoned, no ductwork
A ductless mini-split pairs an outdoor compressor with one or more wall-mounted indoor heads, connected by a small line set through a roughly 3-inch hole, no ductwork required. Each head is its own zone with its own thermostat, so you condition only the rooms you're using, at the temperature each room wants.
Mini-splits are typically the most efficient option thanks to inverter-driven compressors, and because most are heat pumps they heat as well as cool, cold-climate models keep heating well below 0°F, which makes them a genuine year-round option in Minnesota. The indoor head is also very quiet.
They shine for spaces ducts were never built to reach: room additions, bonus rooms over the garage, sunrooms, and finished basements (see comfort by room). Central air: whole-home comfort when you have ducts
Central air conditioning cools the entire house through your existing ductwork, sharing the furnace's blower to push conditioned air to every room. The equipment lives outside and in the basement or a closet, so the living space stays quiet, the temperature stays even, and there's nothing mounted on the wall.
If your home already has ducts, central air is usually the most cost-effective way to cool the whole house, and it's the option most buyers expect, so it tends to support resale value. The catch is the ductwork: a home without ducts needs them installed, which is a much bigger project (and the moment a mini-split often wins instead).

Frequently asked questions
- Is a mini-split cheaper than central air?
- It depends on scope. For a single room or an addition with no ductwork, a one-zone mini-split is usually cheaper than extending central air. For cooling a whole home that already has ducts, central air is typically the more cost-effective choice because mini-splits are priced per zone.
- Can a window AC cool my whole house?
- No. A window unit is designed for one room. Running several to cover a house is loud, inefficient, and still leaves uneven temperatures, at that point central air or a multi-zone mini-split is the better value.
- Do mini-splits work in Minnesota winters?
- Yes. Cold-climate ductless heat pumps are built to keep heating well below 0°F, and because they both heat and cool they're a true year-round solution here. For the coldest snaps, we'll discuss whether a backup heat source makes sense.
- I already have ducts, should I still consider a mini-split?
- For whole-home cooling, central air usually makes the most sense when you already have ducts. A mini-split is still worth considering for a specific hard-to-reach room, an addition, or when you want independent temperature control in certain zones.
