UV light vs. air purifier: which does your home need?

They sound interchangeable, but they solve different problems. A UV light tackles biological growth on your system's coil; an air purifier or high-MERV filter captures the particles floating in your air. Many Twin Cities homes benefit most from one, the other, or a combination, here's how to tell.

The short answer

Choose a UV light to keep mold and bacteria from growing on a damp evaporator coil and in the air handler. Choose an air purifier or high-MERV filtration to capture dust, pollen, dander, and smoke particles. UV targets microbes on surfaces; purifiers and filters capture particles in the airstream, they're complementary, not competitors.

What a UV light actually does

An HVAC UV lamp (a "germicidal" or UV-C light) is installed near the evaporator coil, where condensation keeps things damp and microbial growth tends to start. The UV energy disrupts mold spores and bacteria on those wet surfaces, keeping the coil and drain pan cleaner and reducing the musty "dirty sock" smell some systems develop.

What it doesn't do: it isn't a particle filter. UV won't capture dust, pollen, or pet dander floating through the ducts, those pass right by. It's a surface-and-microbe tool, not an air-cleaning filter.

What an air purifier / high-MERV filtration does

Whole-home air cleaning is about particles. A higher-MERV media filter, an electronic air cleaner, or a whole-home purifier captures dust, pollen, dander, smoke, and other particulates as air cycles through the system, so they're removed from circulation instead of resettling in your rooms.

The key is matching the filter to your system: a filter that's too restrictive for your blower can choke airflow and strain the equipment, so the right MERV level is a balance, not "highest number wins."

Do UV lights really work in HVAC systems?
For their intended job, controlling microbial growth on the damp coil and in the air handler, coil-sited UV-C lamps are effective. They are not a substitute for filtration; they don't capture airborne dust or allergens.
Is a higher-MERV filter always better?
Not necessarily. A filter that's too restrictive for your blower reduces airflow and strains the system. The goal is the highest MERV your equipment can handle comfortably, which is why sizing matters.
Can I have both UV and an air purifier?
