Work through these before the first freeze, while it is still comfortable to be outside:

  • Replace the air filter. Start the heating season with a clean filter for good airflow and cleaner air.
  • Test the heat early. Run the furnace on a cool day so you find any problem now, not at midnight in January.
  • Test and update CO detectors. Press test on every carbon-monoxide detector, replace batteries, and replace any unit past its expiration date.
  • Clear vents, registers, and returns. Move furniture, rugs, and drapes off supply registers and return grilles so air can circulate.
  • Check the exterior intake and exhaust. On a high-efficiency furnace, clear leaves and nests from the PVC intake/exhaust pipes outside.
  • Switch the thermostat to heat. Confirm it responds, and set your winter schedule.

Test your heat before the first cold snap

The first time you run the furnace each year is when problems surface — a failed igniter, a bad flame sensor, a worn blower motor. You want that to happen on a 50° October day, when a service call is routine, not on the first sub-zero night when a no-heat house is a genuine emergency and the whole metro is calling at once. Carbon-monoxide safety: the step you can’t skip

A furnace burns fuel, and the heat exchanger is the barrier that keeps combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — out of your air. As that barrier ages it can crack, and CO is odorless and colorless, so detectors are your warning. Test a working CO detector on every level and outside sleeping areas, and replace any that is expired (most last about 5–7 years). Keep the high-efficiency intake & exhaust clear all winter

If you have a high-efficiency (96%+) furnace, it vents through white PVC pipes out a sidewall rather than up a chimney — and those pipes sit low enough to be buried by a Minnesota snowfall or sealed by an ice dam. A blocked intake or exhaust will shut the furnace down for safety (best case) or create a combustion hazard (worst case). Check them after every big snow and keep them clear of snow sliding off the roof.
