No heat — or cold air from the vents — during a Minnesota cold snap is unnerving, but the cause is often simple. First check the thermostat: set the fan to AUTO (not ON) and the system to HEAT. On ON, the blower runs constantly and pushes room-temperature air between burns, which feels “cold.” If that is not it, a dirty filter, a dirty flame sensor, a high-efficiency condensate lockout, or a tripped limit switch can each cut the heat while the blower keeps running. Change the filter and fix the thermostat yourself; call a pro for ignition, flame-sensor, gas, or repeated-lockout issues.
Start with the thermostat: fan ON vs. AUTO
This is the number-one cause and the easiest to rule out. If your thermostat fan is set to ON, the blower runs nonstop — including during the gaps between heating cycles, when there is no flame — so the air feels cold. Set the fan to AUTO so it only runs when the furnace is actively heating. Confirm the system is set to HEAT, the setpoint is a few degrees above room temperature, and (for battery thermostats) the batteries are fresh.
Check the air filter
A clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow. The heat exchanger overheats, and a safety device called the limit switch shuts the burners off to protect the equipment — but the blower keeps running, so you get cold air. A filter that has not been changed in months is one of the most common reasons heat cuts out. Swap in a fresh filter and check it monthly in winter; it is a core part of any HVAC tune-up.
Ignition and flame-sensor problems
If the furnace tries to light but quickly shuts down — firing for a few seconds, then blowing cold — a dirty flame sensor is a frequent offender. The sensor confirms a flame is present; when it is coated in residue, the control board shuts off the gas as a safety measure. A failing igniter or pilot can cause the same no-heat result. These involve gas and the ignition system, so they are a job for a technician.
High-efficiency furnace condensate lockout
If you have a 90%+ high-efficiency (condensing) furnace, it produces acidic water — condensate — that has to drain away. When that line clogs or freezes (a real risk in an unheated Minnesota basement or near an exterior wall), a pressure switch locks the furnace out and it will not fire at all. Clearing or thawing the condensate path restores heat.
Overheating and the limit switch
The limit switch cuts the burners if the furnace gets too hot, usually because airflow is restricted. A single trip can be harmless, but repeated trips point to an underlying airflow problem — a dirty filter, closed or blocked supply registers, a dirty blower wheel, or a duct issue. Chasing the root cause (not just resetting it) is what keeps the heat on for good.

You can safely set the thermostat to HEAT and the fan to AUTO, replace the batteries, change the filter and open blocked vents, and confirm the furnace breaker and power switch are on. - Why does my furnace blow warm, then cold, then warm again?
- That's short cycling - the furnace lights, then shuts down before fully heating, often from a dirty flame sensor or an overheating/limit-switch issue. It's worth having checked, because running that way is hard on the equipment.
- Should the fan run when there's no heat coming out?
- Only if the fan is set to ON. On AUTO, the blower runs just during a heat call. If you want constant air circulation, ON is fine - but it will blow unheated air between cycles, which can feel cold.
- My high-efficiency furnace won't start at all in the cold - why?
- A frozen or clogged condensate line can trigger a pressure-switch lockout that prevents the furnace from firing. It's common in Minnesota when the drain runs through a cold space. Clearing or thawing the line restores operation.
- Is it OK to keep resetting the furnace?
- Resetting once is fine. But repeated lockouts mean a real fault - a safety device is doing its job. Stop resetting and have it diagnosed, especially with gas and ignition components involved.
