Do you need a permit to replace your furnace or AC?

In most Twin Cities jurisdictions, yes. A permit is generally required whenever you go beyond a simple repair, including:

  • Replacing a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or water heater.

The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is simply whoever enforces that code where you live, usually your city or county building department and its inspector.
