Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged

A clogged dryer vent doesn’t just waste energy — it’s one of the most overlooked fire risks in the home. Suspect a clog if clothes take more than one cycle to dry, the dryer or laundry room gets very hot, you smell something burning, the exterior vent flap barely opens, or you see lint around the connection. A burning smell means stop the dryer and have the vent cleared right away.

Clothes take longer than one cycle to dry

The single most common sign. When lint restricts airflow, moist air cannot escape, so loads come out damp and need a second cycle. Beyond the wasted energy and wear on the dryer, the machine is now running hotter and longer than it was designed to.

The dryer or laundry room feels hot

A vent that cannot exhaust traps heat. If the top of the dryer is hot to the touch or the laundry room becomes noticeably warm and humid during a cycle, airflow is blocked and heat is building where it should not.

A burning or musty smell

A hot, burning, or “lint” smell is the most urgent sign — overheated lint is exactly what ignites in a dryer fire. Stop using the dryer and have the vent inspected and cleared before running it again. A musty smell instead can mean trapped moisture from a blocked vent.

The exterior vent flap barely moves

Go outside while the dryer runs and watch the exterior hood. The flap should open with a steady push of warm air. If it barely lifts — or you feel little to no airflow — the run is blocked. In Minnesota, also check that snow, ice, or a bird or rodent nest is not capping the hood.

Visible lint, and the “clean the trap” trap

Lint around the dryer’s rear connection or piling up near the exterior vent is a clear tell. And remember: a spotless lint screen does not mean a clean vent — most lint collects deep in the duct where you cannot see it. If you are seeing these signs, your cleaning schedule is overdue regardless of the date.
